Hours of work: 40 hrs , 5 day pattern

Job Purpose / Overview
The Chemical Safety and CoSHH Advisors will provide high-quality technical advice on
the management of chemicals on the HPC site supporting safety, health, fire and
environment functions to deliver a safe working environment on one of Europe's largest
and busiest construction sites. The role will involve providing support and coaching to
contract partner COSHH Co-ordinators as well as supporting the site's migration into a
COMAH-regulated site as commissioning of the power station approaches. The role will
also involve providing advice to the site's emergency response capability to ensure that
the right response tools are in place.

Operating Environment
Hinkley Point C is a major infrastructure project requiring expertise and support of many
other contractor organisations to deliver the project safely, to the right quality, on
schedule and within budget. To provide assurance to our stakeholders that the project
will be delivered safely and that we are controlling all potential hazards and safety risks,
this position is required to support any activity that can help control site wide risks to the
project. The project presents unusual challenges with numerous contractors working in
close proximity to tight schedules.
The project therefore provides an rare opportunity for develop exceptional skills in the
management of chemical risks in dynamic conditions, supported by a wide range of
subject matter experts.
Framework & Boundaries
The Chemical Safety and CoSHH will report to the Site Environmental Engineering Lead.
The post holder will develop a 'one-team' working relationship with all key stakeholders
and external stakeholders always providing clear communication and support to internal
departments, programme teams and external stakeholders ensuring emergency
arrangements are suitable and sufficient against the current and future risk profile.
Principal Accountabilities
* Chemical Safety and CoSHH Advisor, providing advice
Assess contractor requests to bring products to site and ensure that Subject Matter
Experts are consulted as required
* Coach and support contract partners to reach the high standards and chemical safety
demanded at HPC
* Identify hazards that require addition mitigation or response measures and advise the
relevant stakeholders
* Support the delivery of an improved chemical management system for the unique
circumstances at HPC
* Identify chemical hazards and support specialists and contract partners to assess the
risks and identify mitigation
* Support the development of an effective Chemical Management Community of Best
Practice across the organisation
Dimensions
This position does not hold any line management or budgetary responsibility. The post
holder will normally work within policy guidelines under the managerial guidance of the
Site Environmental Engineering Lead. However, in view of the unpredictable nature of
the job, a significant degree of autonomy and appropriate decision making is expected of
the post holder when working on his/ her own.

Knowledge & Skills
Essential
* Highly skilled in instruction and presentation skills and communicates effectively both

* A broad knowledge of chemical hazards and mitigation including potential for

* Knowledge of relevant regulations and guidance

Qualifications & Experience
Essential
* A degree or equivalent in chemistry or a similar discipline
* Formal training in chemical risk assessment (at least P304)
* Experience managing chemicals on busy sites
Desirable
* Experience of building effective professional relationships in a construction
environment
* Experience in waste classification and hazardous waste management
* Awareness of environmental management and toxicology assessments
* Experience of DSEAR assessments
* Experience in process safety
